| Description: | The village of Faleaseela is located along the coastal area on the southwest of Upolu Island. The local populace around the area relies heavily on the sea as the major source of fish protein. The youth group had identified tilapia farming as an alternative livelihood to alleviate the fishing pressure on natural fish resources. Fisheries Division utilize tilapia for farming activities in communities to promote fish farming to cater for the decline in marine fish as a result of over-harvesting. The EFKS youth Tilapia Project is an initiative by the young people of the church to identify the potential of this commodity to becoming an alternative livelihood for the community after several attempts to develop other commodities seemed unpromising. The project is also developing a marine reserve to complement its Tilapia Project, through monitoring the re-stocking of marine resources (fish stocks and shellfish). The Youth Group EFKS is working closely with the Fisheries Division, Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries. |
